Ultramar (Empire Travel Club) is an augmented archive of 166 portraits issued from 6 rolls of black and white silver gelatin negatives found in the ground between the pavement in Lisbon in 2001, revealing the portraits of young Africans and soldiers from another time. The photographic series steals the audience away to a travel agency from an empire in the past. The imagery mentally recreates the destination represented by the photographs: depicting the unknown soldier’s intimate diary, a thousand individual lives, combining to create a collective memory, mixing past with present, creating the future and reframing history. – Romaric Tisserand
